cover of “beth/rest” by bon iver, from their self-titled last year.
this marks the second track i’ve done from this album (“holocene” first).
i don’t know if it shows through much but i sort of had jeff buckley on my mind tonight. so it’s a bit based on his style, as well as the acoustic npr version justin vernon did following the release of bon iver.this one was recorded in hughes hall, the music building here. we used to spend so much time there, all night in the auditorium. a lot of deadwood floats’s early recordings are from hughes hall. tonight i packed up all my equipment into my backpack and walked back there, camped out in a practice room on the fourth floor.
auditorium.this recording is sort of different than others lately since it’s an actual acoustic piano, not my electric boy. i also attempted doing it all in one take, which is not something i normally do as it’s slightly more challenging. it’s all just going into the one mic in one big old shot. i think it gives it more of a live feel. you get more imperfections - more intimate, right?!
errant heat to the star
and the rain let in
the hawser rolls, the vessel’s whole and christ, it’s thinwell i’d know that you’d offer
would reveal it, though it’s soft and flat
won’t repeat it, cull and coffer’s that
for the soffit, hang this homeward
pry it open with your love
sending lost and alone standing offersit is sleep / it is stone
such recovery
from the daily press, the deepest nest, in keeper’s keepall the news at the door
such a revelry
well, it’s hocked inside of everything you said to meit was found what we orphaned
didn’t mention it would serve us picked
said your love is known
i’m standing up on itaren’t we married?!
i ain’t living in the dark no more
it’s not a promise, i’m just gonna call itheavy mitted love
our love is a star
sure some hazardry
for the light before and after most indefinitelydanger has been stole away
this is axiom
this one’s for colin. because i think he’s really the only person i know who truly enjoys this song a lot for the way the group produced it on the album. i could never get into it too much myself, ‘cept for after i heard the stripped down version on npr. here’s to you colin, good bud overseas!
and there’s jeff buckley.
